While its almost impossible to always have a Pinterest-worthy home 24/7 there are certain aspects that we can can improve on so that it remains somewhat sophisticated despite our crazy schedules and hectic lifestyles.

Take note of these 10 common issues that may be diminishing your home’s sophistication and apply a few easy tweaks to help you self-correct.

LEAVING THE BED UNMADE
Some say that an unmade bed is a reflection of the state of your life and we have to say, we may agree. A crisp, neatly made bed gives your room an instantly put together look and is just so much more welcoming to climb into at night than a pile of crumpled sheets.

NOT KEEPING THE WINDOWS CLEAN
Dirt, pollution, smudges, dust…they all contribute to your windows looking dull and dirty which in turns makes your interior look neglected. Wash your windows regularly to ensure each room in your home looks bright and fresh.

BAD LIGHTING
Extremely bright lighting(think fluorescent) is incredibly harsh on the eyes, while poorly lit rooms create a cold and unwelcoming atmosphere. Play around with different varieties of floor and table lamps to create the intended ambience.

UNCONTROLLED CLUTTER
Having a lot of stuff doesn’t mean living in chaos. It is possible to have a lot of possessions and a sophisticated home – it all comes down to how you manage your possessions so that it is orderly and not lying around as clutter.

EXPOSED WIRES
There are so many ways to hide your wires or at least make them look less obviously, so there really isn’t an excuse to be tripping over trails of wires around the house.

NOT HANGING ARTWORK PROPERLY
Hang it too low or too hight and your artwork immediately loses the intended impact you had in mind when you first hung it up. You’ll find that most galleries and museums hang their art 57 inches from the floor.

WORN OUT OR UGLY HARDWARE ON YOUR CABINETRY
Outdated hardware or hardware that has simply seen better days can make your home look more shabby than chic. Swap them out for brass, gold or even crystal.

NOT SWAPPING OUT CHEAP WINDOW COVERINGS
Tacky plastic blinds may serve as a quick fix if you’re renting but there really are so many stylish options on the market now, so there’s no need for these to be a permanent fixture.

NEGLECTING YOUR TEXTILES
Over used pillows, thread bare blankets and rugs in the incorrect size will take a room’s sophistication down a few notches. Invest in some plump throw pillows, a luxe throw blanket and well fitting rug to correct the problem.

NO GREENERY
House plants, freshly cut flowers, terrariums, even a big bowl of fruit – these all add life, texture and natural beauty to a room that may otherwise look sterile.
