While a liquid soap dispenser is very convenient, a good old solid bar of soap is a much ‘greener’ option, as it’s more concentrated and doesn’t require a plastic bottle. But squishy, wet soap bars next to the basin are a pain, and they harbour bacteria too. So, what to do? Young designer Nathalie Stämpfli has come up with a very satisfactory solution with her Soap Flakes soap holder. It takes an ordinary bar of soap, and shaves off tiny soap flakes every time you want to wash your hands.

What a great idea!
This is an awesome idea. I wonder how easy it’ll be to DIY, probably not much if you’re not looking for an industrial design…

Germany’s trains would feature a similar system in their bathrooms (i.e. shave off a portion of soap; it came in a closed cylinder with a tiny wheel at the bottom. Each turn produced a tiny amount of soap shreds.) up until the 90′s. The soap shavers have long been replaced by liquid soap dispensers… unfortunately.
I don’t see how this is green at all. All bars of soap come individually wrapped in plastic based products.
Cool? Sure. “Green”? No.
The Idea is taken from “deutsche Bahn”, the german railway company. They had and still have that System in there trains scince…, well at least the 60′s.
But that designer version is much nicer of course and you can fit ordinary Soap Bars in. Not those special formed prolongued bricks of ultracheap soap DB uses.
Um that is truly brilliant! LOVE!
Nice. I can use that in the kitchen for my cheese. I wonder if it shreds lettuce too.
You could probably do this with a normal hard cheese grater/lemon zester or something.
That is a genius way to deal with soap!
Where do i get it…Iam looking like this to be mounted at my home for washing hands
