Last week, we rounded up the best global restaurants in Cape Town. Today, we’re headed for Durban, which as everyone knows is renowned for its Indian cuisine. Our Durban contributor Anna Savage, co-founder of the I Heart Market, hunted down the very best places to get your curry, tandoori and bunny chow fix. Read on to for our tried-and-tested recommendations and look out for our International issue (out next Thursday) for more global inspiration.
BEST OF…INDIAN
Little India
Glitz, fairy lights and glittering Ganesh’s fill this more upmarket restaurant. For starters, try their oversized, lacey Potato Dosa pancakes filled with fragrant potato curry and side of coconut chutney or watch the world go by from the balcony over a steaming copper pot of Prawn Breyani and an ice cold Cobra beer. 155 Musgrave Rd. 031 201 1121
Amaravathi Palki’s
Indian chefs serve up delicious North and South Indian cuisine. The tandoori specialities are a must - Tikka Chicken and Veg Manchurian – vegetable skewers, marinaded and cooked amongst the glowing embers of the tandoor oven. And, don’t forget a side of Paratha, a flaky coiled flatbread that leaves naan in the shade. 225 Musgrave Rd. 031 201 0019
Little Gujarat
A local institution in the heart of the Grey St precinct serves up canteen style vegetarian meals to all. For a full selection of flavours, order the Veg Thali – bowls of bean curry, samoosas, puri patas and rotis and follow it up with homemade sweetmeats. 107 Dr Goolam St. 031 306 2272
The Britannica Hotel
If it is heat you are looking for then this stalwart has been serving traditional Durban curries with a chilli kick for 30 years. While renowned for their Mutton Curry, the Grilled Prawns in spicy basting are wowing the customers. 1299 Umgeni Rd. 031 303 2266
BEST OF… THE BUNNY CHOW
Gouden’s Restaurant and Take Away
For Durban’s best bunny chows, head into the heart of industria. Through a garage door and down a hall – you’ll know you have arrived by the long winding queue of factory workers. 39 Eaton Rd. 031 205 5363

Great coverage of our local hotspots! If you’re interested there’s this little family run Greek Restaurant called Delfi in Windermere Road ( now Lilian Ngoyi Rd), Durban. I’ve been there many times and it’s always great. Small and homely, it’s not particularly fancy and rather unassuming, but offers great food at a great price. There moussaka is melt-in-your-mouth good. I shared a simple mezze starter, had tow Cokes, Moussaka for mains and dessert for R90 a while back. Then there’s Mooki Noodles in Brand Road opposite Corner Cafe, but I think you know about them already.
