We’ve just received this photograph (above) of the beautiful collaborative wallpaper design at the Saartjie Baartman Centre in Manenberg. The centre, a refuge for women and children who have experienced domestic or sexual violence, hosted a four-day workshop with textile designer and facilitator Jane Solomon and the Cape Craft and Design Institute. The result? This wallpaper design, created by a group of the women. The dining area is now a welcoming space where the women can enjoy meals with their children and start to reconstruct their lives and their families. Here’s how the design came about…
Partners are the City of Cape Town, the Cape Craft and Design Institute, textile designer and facilitator Jane Solomon, and Plascon. Contact the Cape Craft and Design Institute for more information about this project, or visit saartjiebaartmancentre.org.za for ways to get involved.
