Lucky us, we’ve two guest posts in a row! This time, we hear from stylist, trend reporter and blogger, Arren Williams, who lives in Toronto, Canada. You’ll catch his work appearing regularly in Canadian House & Home, and when he’s not in front of his laptop tapping away on a project you might find him walking his whippet Spot, or shopping vintage and thrift around town. Take it away, Arren!

It’s not often that I get stopped in my tracks when I’m out and about sourcing for a story, since I’m usually beetling straight ahead, checking things off a mental list as I find them. So I was happily gobsmacked the other day in the midst of Urban Outfitters while I was heading to the cash laden down with Alice in Wonderland glassware. The thing that caught my eye, and made me put down the glasses, was UO’s Dollhouse Chairs jewellery stand.

Though when I picked it up all I thought of was cool! and where could I fit it in with all my other collectibles? In fact, I had no idea it was a jewellery stand until I made it home – visions of piled up miniature chairs dancing in my head – and did a bit of research online to track it down. So yep, I definitely have a spot for it, though in my house I don’t think I’ll be dangling any earrings off it, I think it’s lovely as is.

A modest dish

This idea makes so much sense to me. I’ve never really enjoyed covering the pretty pattern on a dish with food, as I’m not sure which to pay attention to. In order for the food to be the star of the show, these traditional Jingdezhen patterns have been painted on the underside of the serving dish, in order that the spotlight can be on the food while the dish’s beauty remains apparent.

See more dishes that express the Japanese notion of “the reverse side in particular should be made beautiful” at K-shop.

I love the simplicity of the Balloon Seasoning Shaker, designed by Japanese architect and product designer, Masayuki Kurokawa.

It’s available, alongside other work by the same designer, including glassware, cutlery, watches and a measuring tape, at K-shop.

Love these Bolle bottles by prolific Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala, for Venini.

I saw the bottles online yesterday, and then realised I’d just seen more of this designer’s work at Melissa’s just up the road from me, where they have a selection of glass jugs for Iittala, including one designed by Tapio Wirkkala. I think I might go back for another look, and maybe I’ll pack my wallet this time…

Our brilliant stylist Tracy Lynch does it again, showing us how to make stunning and cost-effective table displays with recycled paper and household items.

In the pic below, she’s worked wonders with nothing but old cardboard boxes, tape and a spool of twine. See pages 82 – 83 to see how to CIY (Create it Yourself).

On page 86, she also tells you more about how simple white paper, used as paper chains and cutouts, can make a striking scene.

Louise Gelderblom

Top South African ceramicist, Louise Gelderblom got in touch last week to let us know that she’s opened an online shop to sell her exceptionally lovely sculptural vessels. While her working methods are firmly rooted in an African clay tradition, her work is part of an urban contemporary aesthetic.

All Louise Gelderblom’s ceramics are handmade in her studio at the beautiful Montebello Design Centre in Newlands, Cape Town.

Bebop Antik

With a home page image like this one, you know that Bebop Antik is no run-of -the-mill vintage store.

This store, based in Göteborg, Sweden, specialises in Scandinavian design between 1920 and the 1970s. Their store is full of treasures, both those by famous names like Wegner, Mogensen, Jacobsen and Juhl, but also lesser-known work that’s been included just because it’s so exciting.

Saint Verde’s-eye View: kindred spirits

A familiar sight to all of us with a keen eye for detail are the many South African objects made from wire. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that the raw materials are inexpensive, and easily available, but I’m not forgetting the skill of the makers. The thing I find so interesting is the fact that the French share a similar design sentiment to us, even though we are miles apart culturally as well as physically. This is a peek at some of the wire work you might find wondering around a French flea market, in a town with a name you can’t pronounce.
