We recently stumbled across Barcelona-based designer, Mario Ruiz, who has just launched a new collection of sideboards. Sadly not available to purchase in South Africa, but offering plenty of design inspiration for your DECO palette this winter.
Sideboards are one of those furniture pieces that divide opinion. Some feel they serve a primarily functional purpose – hiding away superfluous crockery collections, displaying cherished photographs and prized ornaments – whereas a statement sideboard in just the right tone can completely transform a room.
Without overpowering its setting, the sleek mid-century style of Mario Ruiz’s latest collection has firmly landed on DECO’s wishlist. Ruiz combines natural and stained woods with polished and anodised aluminium in his collection for Punt called Stockholm.
With a quality combination of materials and precise styling, the collection offers a new kind of sophistication. The rectilinear bodies and free-standing drawers are composed with wood and have an aluminium skin which continues up three of its sides. The aluminium is available in gold, pale rose, black, silver or bronze.
Colourwise, the charcoal free-standing four-door console above with gold inlay is probably top of our list, but we were mightily impressed with the flexibility of the wall-mounted unit above – the perfect way to make constructive use of otherwise redundant walls when floor space is at a premium. All you inner-city apartment dwellers – we’re talking to you.
