Want to make your dinner parties extra special this year with innovative ingredients and on-trend foods? Then we’re here to help.

We spoke to Alex Head, founder of catering company Social Pantry, to find out what the top food trends are for the year ahead. Get ready to take notes…

1. CAULIFLOWER
“Move over kale, cauliflower is the veggie to watch this year,” Head says. “This beauty is incredibly versatile — serve whole as a ‘steak’ for a vegetarian main dish, blitz it up and serve as an alternative to rice for those carb-free dinners or roast it and pair with mint and pomegranate for a mighty fine salad.”

2. CHARCOAL
This may sound like an unusual ingredient for a successful dinner party but it is known to be a fantastic detoxifier. “It’s definitely a talking point when added to any dish,” Head believes. Here are a few of her favourite charcoal recipes:

  • Charcoal sourdough — serve with an infused butter, our favourite right now is marmite butter.
  • Blackout juice — a shot served at the end of a meal to ease digestion.
  • Add charcoal to your pancake mix this February and serve with lemon curd. It’ll definitely be a Shrove Tuesday talking point.

3. CREATIVE CONDIMENTS
“Think beetroot labneh, black sesame tahini, orange and rose petal butter,” says Head. “It’s time to glam up your condiments this year.”

It’s about less plain butter and more colourful alternatives. “Get creative with your ingredients and serve with raw broccoli or baby crudities. Dips are perfect to pre-make and have on hand to settle in hungry guests.”

4. PURPLE POWER
“Purple foods are popping up just about everywhere – from purple carrots and cauliflower to acai and black rice,” Head suggests. “Make a statement with having something purple on your plate. High in anti-oxidants, purple produce is considered not only delicious and healthy but also easy on the eye.”

5. RETRO REVIVAL
“Think 70s classics with a twist,” Head states. “We’ve been singing sherry’s praises in 2016 which we’re carrying through to this year.” If you aren’t confident enough to serve it up as a drink to your guests, try Head’s sherry fudge recipe as an after dinner treat.
