The Fifth Edition of the Turbine Art Fair Zones in on the Art of Collecting

With over fifty galleries and exhibits from across the country, this year’s Turbine Art Fair, held at the historic Turbine Hall in Newtown, Johannesburg, offers visitors a chance to buy arts from emerging and establishing artists.

Curated by Art Advisor, Makgati Molebatsi and sponsored by Artinsure, the festival’s highlights include the the TAF Talks, which invite audiences to engage in panel discussions with artists and seasoned collectors about their acquisitions.

Here is what we are looking forward to:

Collecting within and Beyond Walls

Turbine Art Fair

What: A panel discussion featuring Nomahlubi Shezi, Tshepo Hlongwane and Dawood Petersen and Liesle Barrath, joined by Tamzin Lovell Miller, in conversation with Tladi Marumo.

This discussion invites these seasoned collectors to talk about the artwork that inspires them, what motivates them to collect and whether their acquisitions extend outside of walls to sculptures, video, installation, even performance art

When: Saturday, 15 July, 15:00 – 16:00

Artist and Collecting: Are they interested in building massive collections?

Turbine Art Fair

 What: A Panel Discussion with Usha Seerjarim, Nelson Makamo, Lawrence Lemaona joined by Kara Blackmore, in conversation with Makgati Molebatsi

A range of artists making an important contribution to the art world are invited to talk about what it means for them to collect the work of their contemporaries, through trades and swaps. The value of acquiring a work of art during the formative years of its creator will also form part of the conversation.

When: Sunday, 16 July, 11:30 – 13:00

 Peggy Guggenheim – Art Addict

What: A film screening that documents the wild and eccentric life of iconic collector Peggy Guggenheim, who is often cited as having built the New York art scene.

 When: Saturday 15th July, 11:30 – 13:00 and Sunday 16th July 15:15 – 16.45

The Art Fair is on from the 14th -16th July

Tickets:          R100 at the door or R90 online via webtickets
