Guest post: Miss Moss on Nook

Today we’re thrilled to have a guest  post from the talented Miss Moss, who is a Stellenbosch based graphic designer / blogger who dabbles in drawing, painting & photographing nice things. She’s telling us about a brand new eatery in Stellenbosch, called Nook. Take it away, Miss Moss:

When Jessica Shepherd and Luke Grant returned from a 2 year stint in Dubai, they saw an opportunity to open their own restaurant in her hometown of Stellenbosch. In just 10 weeks they had transformed the somewhat battered premises in oak-lined Ryneveld Street into the welcoming & cheerful Nook Eatery.

Working on a tight budget, the couple decided to do all the renovation work themselves – sanding & painting furniture, sourcing trinkets from second hand shops, and recycling pieces left behind by the previous owner (like a pair of old shutters, which they painted white and hung on the wall to use as magazine racks.)

Inspired by the restaurants they had visited on their travels, especially café culture in cities like Melbourne and Sydney, they wanted to recreate the same unpretentious and casual feeling in Nook. This is also reflected in the personable and friendly way they interact with their customers, with regulars often spending an entire afternoon eating & relaxing in their favourite corner.

Jessica (the chef) changes her menu regularly depending on what’s in season, and daily specials range from summer salads to South African favourites like fish and chips. Homemade butter croissants, sticky cinnabons, unfussy breakfasts and the Nook burger are popular choices too. Produce is sourced from farms in the area and contacts they’ve made through Stellenbosch’s Slow Food Market – including the popular locally brewed Jack Black beer.

Nook can be found at 42 van Ryneveld Street, Stellenbosch and is open Monday to Saturdays from 8h30 – 17h00, as well as on Wednesday evenings when they make pizzas from the wood-fired oven.

Thanks, Miss Moss, for your mouthwatering post. I’ll definitely be heading off to Stellenbosch these holidays to see Nook Eatery for myself!
