Mario Arroyave’s Timeline

Colombian artist Mario Arroyave’s series ‘Timeline’ captures the innate elegance and magnificence of seemingly ordinary actions by seizing a moment in time.

Timeline makes use of visual repetition as a metaphor for time by presenting an alternate reality to the viewer. Surreal scenarios are formed by digitally manipulating scenes. Multiple movements are duplicated and layered into complex compositions, showing the passage of time.

Complex acts like water and snow sports, diving, skiing, and marathon running are the primary focus of Arroyave’s recent photographic work. The activities become ‘flattened’ and capture multiple moments in time in a single frame. The end result is a synthesised buzz resulting from digitally duplicating and reproducing the players he photographs.
