Out & About: Natural Selection

An upcoming show at Rust en Vrede Gallery that shouldn’t be missed is a joint exhibition by Nic Bladen and Jane Eppel, entitled Natural Selection. Together, these artists have collaborated to express their equal  fascination and love for indigenous Cape flora, with an overarching theme of the fragility and regenerating powers of nature. As Eppel puts it, “My etchings seem all air and Nic’s botanical castings all grounded earth”.

Jane Eppel is a painter and printmaker whose love of plants and insects erves as both her inspiration and subject matter for this body of work. Her unique style of printmaking includes intricate hand-cut copperplates juxtaposed with monoprints  of actual plants.

Sculptor Nic Bladen uses lost wax casting to create complex molds of leaves, flowers, and other organic material, enabling him to cast entire plants in bronze, from root-tip to flowers. See more of his insanely intricate and beautiful work at his website.

Natural Selection opens at Rust en Vrede Gallery on 19 April 2011.
