The celebrated Danish textile and colour designer Margarethe Odgaard, well-versed in Scandinavian weaving technique, has fashioned a timeless rug design, which brings forth a modish, understated elegance to any abode. Odgaard was inspired by eminent Danish weavers, and her objective was to craft a practical rug of a high standard with an unfussy, although vivid pattern.
Ply is hence a rug, which serves as both a neutral foundation and a chic adornment in any particular setting. The rug is available in five distinct and personally selected colour permutations, and three sizes. The finishing tassels on the corners, illustrate the artistry in a rug, designed to be handed over through generations.
Margrethe Odgaard on the Design
“Ply is a simple and elegant rug showcasing the craft of traditional hand weaving. A unique broken twill structure enhances the vibrant and almost three-dimensional zigzag pattern, creating a perfect balance of the calm and the conspicuous. Made from high quality, New Zealand wool, and with intriguing tassels as a finishing detail, Ply is a new take on the classic weft-faced rug, transporting the roots of our Scandinavian culture into the future.”
The Torsten and Wanja Söderberg Prize 2016
The Röhsska Museum award committee for the Torsten and Wanja Söderberg Prize, chose to grant Odgaard this year’s prize of 1 million Swedish Kronas (SEK).
The award committee expresses their rationale: “Margrethe Odgaard uses textiles as her basis for design. By thinking with her hands, her approach is at once artisan, tactile, and well thought through. Using both poetic and consistent colour and pattern studies, Odgaard creates coherence in a breath-taking process that is imbued with musicality. Her artistic vision is propelled by her desire for creation and enrichment in which knowledge, ideas, and skills are shared generously and with perseverance.”
About Margrethe Odgaard
A 2005 graduate from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Design, with further studies at Rhode Island School of Design in the United States, Odgaard’s concentration as a textile designer is on colours, patterns, and tactility. What fuels her work is an ongoing quest for new methods of exploiting colour and pattern in the fabric. Ply is her first item developed for MUUTO.
