While we’re all for indulging in the comfort of a steaming bowl of oats or French toast smothered in syrup during the winter months, we’re certainly looking forward to embracing the warmer weather and adopting a lighter, fresher diet. If you’re anything like us and spend a considerable amount of time on Instagram, you would have undoubtably come across beautiful, lush looking bowls filled with creamy goodness in all shades of the rainbow.
Say hello to the smoothie bowl. It’s pretty much what the name says it is – a smoothie in a bowl – except that its topped with an assortment of fruits, nuts and seeds, so you don’t drink it all in one go. Why not welcome in the new season by making a smoothie bowl of your own…
Maple Chai Smoothie Bowl
1 large banana, peeled, frozen, and cut into chunks
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1 tablespoon chia seeds
2 teaspoons almond butter
1/2 teaspoon chai spice blend (below)
1 cup unsweetened almond milk
4-5 large ice cubes
For the chai spice blend: 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon, 1 tablespoon ground cardamom, 1 tablespoon ground allspice, 1 tablespoon ground cloves, 1 tablespoon ground ginger
Toppings: gluten-free granola, hemp seeds, toasted unsweetened coconut, pumpkin seeds, nuts, and/or berries
- To make the smoothie bowl, combine the banana, maple syrup, chia seeds, almond butter, chai spice blend, almond milk, and ice in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into a bowl and add desired toppings.
- To make the chai spice blend, whisk all the ingredients together. Store in an airtight container indefinitely. (Makes a little over 1/4 cup.)
Green Smoothie Bowl
1 small, fresh mango, cut into chunks
½ medium cucumber, sliced
a big handful of kale, stems removed (or spinach)
⅓ cup almonds (ideally, previously soaked)
1 tbsp moringa powder
2 tbsp hulled hemp seeds
2 cups plant-based milk
Toppings: pumpkin seeds, desiccated coconut, your favourite granola
Place all the ingredients into a high-speed blender and blend until smooth and creamy. Add more water or plant-based milk if needed. Pour into bowls and top with the pumpkin seeds, coconut and granola.
Beet & Berry Smoothie Bowl
1 cup frozen or fresh berries
½ cup red beets, diced small (approximately 1 medium sized beet)
¼ cup ground flax
2 handfuls greens (baby kale or baby spinach)
½ cup unsweetened almond milk
Toppings: drizzle of honey or maple syrup, fresh berries, hemp seeds, chia seeds, bee pollen, buckwheat groats, lemon thyme
- Blend all of the ingredients until smooth.
- Top with additional garnishes.
