In a world first, Southern Guild is moving on up from our local shores to participating as Africa’s first gallery to take centre stage at the prestigious Christie’s in London. Featuring local artists and designers, the world’s eyes will be on Africa. DECO finds out more…
Southern Guild continues to provide the most exciting collectable designs. This amazing exhibition features 14 exceptional works from 12 of South Africa’s best designers; Andile Dyalvane, Astrid Dahl, Beth Diane Armstrong, David Krynauw, Dokter and Misses, Dylan Lewis, Gregor Jenkin, Ian Garrett, John Vogel, Meyer von Wielligh, and Topple – a collaborative project between John Murray and Paco Pakdoust; and Seemo, a collaborative piece by Porky Hefer and Peter Mabeo.
This is the first time Southern Guild has shown a collection of such significance in collaboration with one of the most important auction houses in the world –Trevyn McGowan, co-founder of Southern Guild
Since 2014 Christie’s has become one of the largest auction houses in London. This new collaboration with Southern Guild signifies a heightened interest in African Design, a collective of individual expression coming together in a potent design industry that highlights the social act of dedicated, focused curators, designers and institutions whose drive and passion is to provoke exceptional design.
The collaboration is a unique moment for us, but it’s also the first time our British and international audience can access the products from our ground-breaking African designers in London.
We’ve had a phenomenal response at Design Miami, with an almost sell-out show last year, that we’re now lauded as one of the must-see galleries at the fair.
Such a reception cements South Africa’s place amid the best in the world.
I am delighted to be working on this project with Trevyn and Julian to bring a microcosm of the design scene in Africa to the international auction market. Southern Guild’s presence at the major design fairs in Miami and Basel has added enormous zest and energy to those shows – Jeremy Morrison, Senior Director of Design at Christie’s London
