‘The perfect chair’ for 2012 – the Piana Alessi chair by Lamm

We’re always on the lookout for smart practicality in everyday household designs. ALESSI, manufacturer of modern household and kitchen design objects, has produced just that in the form of their beautiful and striking new “Piana” chair, the company’s first foray into seat design. Designed by David Chipperfield and produced by Lamm, the design was introduced for the first time in April 2011 at the International Salone del Mobile in Milan, and has recently been included in The Museum of Modern Art collection. Its simple design easthetic is exactly what we have in mind for 2012 – beautiful practicality.

The concept for ‘Piana’ focused on a simple, iconic, general-purpose folding chair, easily recognizable as such. Light, sturdy, practical and environmentally conscious, this top-quality “Made in Italy” project is available in multiple striking colours. It folds completely flat and is horizontally stackable, as seen below…

In describing this new ALESSI archetype, Alberto Alessi, president of ALESSI spa, says, ‘From a creative point of view, I consider it a masterstroke in the most difficult area for designers: a type of product that many artists have tried their hand at throughout history but with so few excellent results. The revelation in this design has much to do with geometric abstraction and the search for great formal simplicity: rigor and precision as the typical qualities of the designs of David Chipperfield.’ It folds up with such perfection, we’ve been lusting after its clinical aesthetic since we first spotted it at the International Salone del Mobile in Milan last year.
