Black is the new black. The colour of mystery, sophistication and power…tuxedos, judges’ robes and priests’ attire. Literally the combination of all colours of the universe — black continues to be an anchor of style. Accordingly, the 100% Design South Africa feature stand at Decorex SA this weekend is, you guessed it, 100% Black.
Focusing on how form, line and structure play an integral part in the design thinking and creative process, Cathy O’Clery, Programmes Director at 100% Design South Africa, has selected contemporary design pieces completely void of colour for the exhibit. We sat down with her to find more about this inky theme.
There’s something about black. You feel hidden away in it.
~ Georgia O’Keeffe
I love black because it affirms, designs and styles.
~ Yves Saint Laurent
So Cathy, why black?
Black was chosen to make people look at the form, line and structure of the pieces – to show how designers consider these elements in the design process. In other words, I removed colour to look at the silhouette or the sculptural aspects of the design.
Describe the colour…
Sombre, deep, moody, dark, all-encompassing.

What are your top 5 black decor pieces we must look out for at the show?
- A brand new table from Guideline

- Beautiful furniture by Konstantin Grcic, from Crema and Inova

Give us your top 3 black paint shades to paint a living room with?
I recommend a colour darkened to black, rather than pure black itself for the living room. My top 3 blue/blacks are Plascon:
- Pompeii, B3-E1-1
- Black as Night, B6-E1-1
- Night Moss, B2-E1-1
Top local black fabric you have your eye on?
I love black velvet because the pile makes the colour look richer. My top choice at the moment is the graphic velvet Montana, from the Monaco collection by Hertex.
I’ve spent 40 years discovering that the queen of all colours was black.
~ Pierre-Auguste Renoir
