DECO talks to Chris van Niekerk, creative director of Africandy, about the launch of the brand’s concept store, AC.
Why the move to bricks and mortar?
We’ve realised that the nature of our business requires tangible engagement with the product, in addition to the online offering. The bricks and mortar approach also allows us to place the spotlight on a capsule offering, which we believe to be especially representative of the brand.
What influenced you in the design of the store?
The design of Number 66 expresses a decontextualised space – he plays with the idea of a large-scale pixelation of product under the digital zoom. This close-up focus on the product addresses the cross-over between real and digital spaces.
Who are the hot young designers you’ll be stocking at Africandy?
Over the past two years we’ve fostered relationships with a core group, including Wild Olive, Woltemade, 20 Eight Design, Yswara, Ivka Cica and Jeanne von Hirschberg, to name a few. There are around 70 in total, and we’re constantly finding new designers and products, such as Leg Studios.
What item in your store would you love to give and receive as a gift?
We have gift offerings to suit any budget. The CTP and JHB prints are hot property and sell incredibly well. Any Wild Olive or Research Unit luggage items make perfect gifts, as do the mobiles by David Ross for a special occasion – it has a huge impact on any interior, big or small.
What limited-edition items can we look forward to?
We are collaborating with SOMA on a range of chocolates, as well as a stationery range with The Letterpress Company. The focus will turn more to an in-house range in the next six months.
