It was an explosion of colour and texture in episode 2 of Project Runway SA
This week’s theme was electric jungle, which instantly left many of the designers confused – but not for long. Time was tight! The brief? Designers had 30 minutes to soak up the marvel of Maboneng and take a photograph of anything they stumbled upon. This would be the source of inspiration for their creations. Then off to the fabric shop for the first time to manage their own fabric choices and a budget of R1 000 each in 15 minutes. Enter politics, play and pressure points.
Miahs? Got Sandile twerking for extra spending money
Jamie? Revealed that he’s colour blind. Gift? Splashed blue paint on Sandile’s all-white, almost-finished skirt. Kentse? Told Gugu “This is not Survivor, gal!” when Gugu thought they shared some sister solidarity. Ouch! And Siphosihle? The unhappiest of them all with the model allocated to him… and so he pretty much ignored her. All this before runway time with fabulous fashion designer and guest judge Palesa Mokubung.
The looks? Served. Mostly…
Mentor Gert-Johan Coetzee defended Gift’s design (third from right), saying that Gift had really improved since being in the bottom two in episode one. This week, however, the designs of Miahs (fourth from left) and Excellent (fourth from right) landed them in the ultimate firing line. Miahs had only used half of his budget, while Excellent had only made half an outfit, which left host Lerato Kganyago looking like…
A word from the judges:
Rahim on Excellent: It’s less electric jungle and more electric aquatic and looked like a flotation device at the back.
Palesa on Miahs: “The issue I have is taste and choice of fabric – and we can’t teach you that. It’s just something you’re going to have to learn the hard way.”
Finally, Lerato told Miahs that spending only 50% of his budget might have cost him the grand prize. It did. And with that, Miahs was the second designer to be eliminated.
For the second week running, Kentse Masilo walked away the winner. Get it, girl!
