South Africa’s largest home is the extravagantly designed Palazzo Steyn, owned by insurance tycoon Douw Steyn. Set within Steyn City which is destined to become one of South Africa’s most exclusive gated estates, the 3000m² residence is the most technologically advanced in South Africa boasting a state-of-the-art Crestron system which included lighting, AV, climate control and control of roman-style aqueducts surrounding the property.
The lighting system includes 270 circuits which control an array of lighting from the vast crystal chandeliers to picture lights, all controlled via keypads which blend seamlessly with the design and complement the décor. Motion sensors allow for automatic dimming or turning up of the lights when different areas are in use.
A bespoke Crestron climate control system allows for different climates to be created across numerous rooms and for automatic adjustments to be made seasonally via any of the touch screens throughout the property.
In addition a 42-zone background music system delivers music to various entertainment areas simultaneously, including the wine cellar, lounges, bar, pool, dining areas, patios, gym and spa. The music even reaches the bathrooms, which are equipped with motion sensors to set the right mood for bathing.
For definitive luxury, Palazzo Steyn also has two home cinema rooms with big screens and the ultimate in surround sound provided by Crestron.
Panavision Evolve, who also installed the AV in The Saxon, Steyn’s boutique hotel in Johannesburg, worked alongside electrical consultants CKR and interior designer Stephen Falcke on this formidable project.
Speaking about the property Douw Steyn said, ‘my wife and I are looking forward to entertaining our friends and business partners from all over the world at our new residence, while also exposing them to our magnificent country’.
