Back for its 9th edition, the Sanlam Handmade Contemporary Fair took place last weekend at Hyde Park Corner in Johannesburg. The annual fair brings together the best in design and decor, artisanal food and wine and fashion from across the continent.
With a focus on a “return to making”, ELLE Decoration along with one of this year’s guest curators, creative entrepreneur Wacy Zacarias, chose this year’s Best of Competition.
This year’s winners are:
Best Newcomer: Lukhanyo Mdingi
The Cape Town based designer has gathered quite the following for his stylish and sustainable clothing line. His stall included his most covetable pieces as well as several Ben Orkin ceramics on display.
Best Product – Gugu Intimates
The first of its kind on the continent, founder Gugu Nkabinde’s inclusive underwear range, makes several carefully crafted styles for distinct skin tones.
Best Pavillion – Tinsel Gallery
This year the well-respected purveyors of the finest jewellery invited several industry experts and tastemakers to make their own earrings which were then displayed on a cut-out installation.
Best Stand – Ginifer and Westcliff
Jacqueline Grobler is behind one of the few woman-run distilleries in South Africa, Angel Heart, that produces both Ginifer and Westcliff gins made from locally sourced ingredients.
Best Collaboration – Selfie and Waif
Celeste Arendse brought her bespoke ready-to-wear line to the fair in collaboration with the sophisticated pieces that Gisele Human’s Waif has become well known for.
