The growing concern around gang violence in the Cape Flats is something we as a community need to work towards and continuously remind those who are not directly affected by, what a major problem it is. Rock Girl, soon-to-be BRAVE, are a grassroots female-led and female oriented organisation working with girls in the gang-ridden ares of Cape Town.
As an educational programme focusing on design and media who introducing the girls to story-telling, documentary-making and media, BRAVE are very proud to announce their partnership with design industry leader, Southern Guild in hosting their upcoming relaunch which will be held in their gallery on 29-30 July 2016. The event will consist of a sit down dinner, fundraising auction and award ceremony – all in hopes of raising as many funds for the organsiation as possible.
We aim to invest in, inspire and encourage our next generation of bold and powerful females, regardless of their circumstances.
Over the last six years, Rock Girl has grown from a small grassroots art and education programme for girls to become the charity of choice for South African artists and designers committed to creating a safer South Africa for all. The partnership is aiming to raise enough funds at the event to send their girls on their next road trip across the country, where they will document the stories of other girls and inspirational females role models they meet along the way.
The Rock Girl Safe Spaces campaign, launched in August 2010, has seen designers like Laurie Wiid van Heerden, Atang Tshikare, Mokena Makeka, Lovell Friedman and the late Paul du Toit create one-of-a-kind public benches around the city. Rock Girl has successfully advocated for the construction of a new school in Manenberg for 800 learners, and most recently organised a 35km run from Khayelitsha to Cape Town to bridge the divide between communities and raise awareness about the need for safe spaces in every part of Cape Town.
High school girls have been trained as journalists and photographers, and travelled over 2 000km’s to document the stories of girls and women using radio and film and explore their own country, returning home with a new lease on their lives. This, as well as allowing the girls the opportunity to give a voice to their peers all over the country and learning invaluable lessons and confidence from priceless gift of travel.
