It’s becoming increasingly important to make a conscious effort to take a time-out from tech and to make more time for thoughtful rumination. While you might not be a practising yogi, creating a meditation space at home might be just what you need to encourage more rest and relaxation.
With the rise in popularity of concepts around ‘self-care’ and increased internet searches for terms like ‘meditation spaces’ and ‘meditation garden’, it’s clear we’re all looking for ways to slow down the pace of our lives a little. Here are ten easy ways to make your home feel more like a sanctuary:
Find a space
Ideally, your whole home should should make you exhale when you walk through the door, but sometimes, with busy family life, that just might not be practical. Look for a space or corner in your home or garden that you love – ideally a quiet place with natural light that you can close or screen off for some privacy.
Clear the clutter
Meditation is about observing one’s own thoughts in order to create a sense of non-judgemental awareness and perspective. Through the practice, you should be able to identify moments of distracted thought and learn to return that to a state of awareness. Like your mind, your should aim to create a meditation space free of clutter and distractions – so remove all non-essential items.
Connect with nature
The introduction of natural items into the space can help with a sense of calm and connectedness. Plants, natural materials, fibres and textures or a view into an outdoor green space are all helpful in connecting your body and senses to the space. This should be a tech-free zone.
Colour yourself calm
Keep the colour palette neutral. With the exception of natural greenery, your space should be free from colours that will be distracting or elicit emotional responses.
Light the way
If you don’t have natural light or the sun’s set, then ensure you have some warm but dim lighting. Avoid white or bluish light as studies have shown that this light suppresses melatonin production and stimulates your brain.
Scents for your senses
Scented candles, essential oil burners or diffusers can help you relax too. Opt for calming fragrances like lavender or other florals or spices rather that those that might make you more alert like citrus or peppermint.
Sounds of silence
Gentle, background music is recommended if you live in a noisy place, but if you have the luxury of silence then this can be a welcome reprieve from the daily bombardment of sound stimulation.
A breath of fresh air
As breathing plays a big role in meditation and relaxation, try to make sure your meditation space or home has a good circulation of fresh air.
Comfort is key
If you are very flexible, a mat or rug will be sufficient to help you feel comfortable and relaxed in a typical cross-legged meditation position but if you’re not so flexible, then a higher cushion will help you find your groove without strain. Make sure your space is also a comfortable temperature, your don’t want to be distracted by being too hot or cold.
Don’t forget that your garden can also be a wonderful space for meditation as is the tradition in many countries in the Far East.
