Kick off 2016 with a cultural bang! DECO discovered two fantastic exhibitions sure to tickle your fancy at WHATIFTHEWORLD gallery, entitled ‘Foreign Bodies’ and ‘Are we Good Enough?’, both on until 23 January.
In collaboration with some of South Africa’s most prevalent artists, Foreign Bodies exhibits new work that encapsulates the language of bodies. Artists such as Sanell Aggenbach, Julia Rosa Clark, Dan Halter, Moffat Takadiwa, Mohau Modisakeng and Pierre Fouché successfully look beyond the flesh, questioning the borders between skin and the world.
Lakin Ogunbanwo’s new exhibition Are We Good Enough? Is made up of a series of enigmatic portraits that explore identity. Looking at masculine identity, hats are used to illustrate the importance of and effort that goes into constructing ones identity.
It draws attention to what it is that defines an individual within a larger cultural collective; who this individual may be and how they want to be perceived.
