DECO discovered a unique getaway in Greenpoint which merges the appeal of a boutique hotel with the jovial atmosphere of a backpackers.
Making a new discovery is as magical as uncovering a secret. And this is what I found while staying at The B.I.G (Boutique Backpackers in Greenpoint) while recently renovating my apartment. Always slightly nervous of the backpacker scene, The BIG dispelled all these fears. Located in a quiet leafy street in the heart of bustling Greenpoint, The B.I.G is in walking distance of the city’s big attractions and is a charming, boutique, private and extremely well priced.
The former guesthouse at 17 Thornhill Street has been renovated into a traveller’s dream, elevated to a level of luxury unknown and uncharacteristic of the backpacker market.
Owner Amy Kropman’s vision, with the help of her creative crew, has resulted in a gorgeous multi-level space with rooms ranging from poolside multiple-bed rooms to ocean view doubles all accompanied by modern, sleek en suite bathrooms and inspired decor.
Everything from the I Love RSA animal dishes in the open-plan airy kitchen to the framed maps in the cozy library speaks of a labour of love for Amy and her team and an attention to detail born from Amy’s travels abroad.
I wanted to create a space that combined all the most amazing things I’d seen overseas,” says Amy. “Cape Town has such a massive amount of talent – art, design, food, wine, people, views in general – and I wanted to showcase all those things to visiting travellers and make them feel as much love for this incredible place as I do.
Whether you’re from the other side of the world or from the other side of the mountain, get in on the secret.
