Team Deco just discovered our new local – The Black Sheep gastropub on Kloof Street – an intimate, welcoming space that offers up a lot of heart and soul from the food, to the decor, to the people behind it all. Conveniently a hop and skip up the hill from Deco’s new office space, the street-side bar beckons for an afterwork beer or cocktail overlooking Table Mountain and the blackboard menu – which changes daily – offers a variety of salads, vegetarian, fish and meat dishes for both lunch and dinner.

In their words, ‘the restaurant has been a labour of love for the Japha and Silva families, a culmination of 20 years of food laughter and excellent wine’. We like the sound of that and sat down with Head Chef and owner Jonathan Japha to find out more…

What’s the story behind the name?
There is a correlation between the blackboard menu concept and the name. To escape the more static nature of the set menu and offer up something different; using the freshest available ingredients day to day.

 Does that make it more difficult in the kitchen?
The kitchen team have a strong working relationship spanning over many years; the changing menu makes it a creative, dynamic work environment.

 With a constantly changing menu, is there still a Black Sheep signature dish?
The Black Sheep Sheep burger on the lunch menu, and the 7 hour roast leg of lamb on the dinner menu (feeds a table of six)

Who oversaw the look and feel of the space – the barstools, copper lights and decor items?
Very much ourselves from designing and building the barstools, sourcing the lights and our own house is a little emptier for the decor items.

Who designed the wood panelling wall and bar?
With the idea already in mind, Sherry typed ‘wood’ into gumtree and found a ‘buy wood, take the whole lot’ ad. The man’s father, a carpenter, had recently passed away and he was selling the lot in one go. We came back, piled the wood up and Philip Good actualized our idea.

Today’s lunchtime blackboard menu offers dishes such as watermelon, basil and feta salad; to pulled pork sandwiches; braised springbok in red wine and bacon; and polenta cake with aubergines, tomato, basil and goats cheese.

The restaurant’s motto:

‘No one leaves The Black Sheep hungry’.
