The culture of commuting by bicycle is growing in the Mother city, with events such as Moonlight Mass (happening tonight) raising urban cycling’s profile. Starting in Green point and going throughout town, over 1000 bikers take over the streets every full moon.

We have just discovered  Dahon folding bikes, which literally fold up and are incredibly light ,making them easy to transport and use in conjunction with other public transport. The innovative design makes for easy storage at home- perfect for inner city living!

Also available is the sandwich bike. Ikea got us all building our own furniture, now you can build your own bike. Presented as part of the Bleijh exhibition in the Magazzini at the Salone del Mobile in Milan a few weeks ago, the bike is made up of two wooden plates. It is flat packed and  easy to assemble.

And handsome.

Bicycle Portraits by Stan Engelbrecht & Nic Grobler (available from Africandy )is an exploration of our growing commuter culture in South Africa and a portrait of a nation through the bicycles that we own and ride every day.
