DECO’s new favourite spot in town is former art gallery turned luxury café Skinny Legs and All. And it’s the definition of cool: The name, its laid-back street cafe vibe, the ensemble of art, the unpretentious food, and the minimalist décor – especially the chairs and tables, which boast legs of a decidedly skinny nature.
We chat to 22-year-old twin sisters Jesse and Jamie Friedberg…
How did Skinny Legs come about? ‘Growing up in Joburg, we loved preparing meals but our parents didn’t – so we taught ourselves. Then we came across a book called Breakfast, Lunch, Tea by Rose Carrarini of Rose Bakery in Paris. Like us, she isn’t a trained chef and believes food should be accessible, prepared with simple ingredients. We wanted to go to university but, two years into our studies, we decided there was no point in putting off what we really wanted to do with our lives. When this space came available, we leapt at the opportunity.’
Favourite seasonal taste combinations for spring 2011?
1. Lime, Grapefruit and Ginger come together in a lovely citrus-centric ruby-red juice blend.
2. Strawberries and Cream may be somewhat of a cliché but don’t underestimate this combo in the dessert of Eton Mess – a beautiful mixture of crushed meringues, whipped cream and red fruits.
