Bespoke wallpaper designer Calico Wallpaper was founded in Brooklyn, New York in 2013 by creative and life-partners Rachel and Nick Cope. Their unique process combines artisanal methods with innovative digital technologies – creating completely customised, one-of-a-kind wall murals.
Calico creates pieces of art through the medium of wallpaper – artistic creations that become far more than traditional wall coverings. Gilded metallics, ultra vibrant and soft pastels colours are used to create movement and depth.
“Our method embodies years of research in the various disciplines in paper marbling, which have spanned the globe. The arts of Suminagashi and Ebru, emanating from Japan and Turkey centuries ago, are both evident in our inaugural collection.”
By drawing from these forms they have created a paper art form that is truly unique.
Aurora Papers, as seen above, are meant to immerse viewers in waves and washes of colour. Inspired by light and horizons at dawn, the work was developed following research in the art of fabric dying. Mineral pigments such as ultramarine and indigo are suspended in liquid and transferred by hand to organic linen.
