Heidi van Bergen has certainly made her mark at Elle Decoration, working with the Art Department on both print and online in addition to the Decor Department on shoots…and she’s done it with no holds barred style. Want to find out more about her? Here is our interview:
Design is…Creating something that looks effortless, beautiful, classic and timeless.
How did you get into this line of work? What lead me to Design school was really Cape Town itself. I grew up in a town on the outskirts, and coming to the city on weekends made me fall in love with design and the people who create it. Cape Town has an amazing design energy, be it in the cafes, the people, the fashion, the bars. It also has some of the best Design schools. I’ve seen quite a bit of the world and I really think here in Cape Town, we’re real lucky, we’ve got something great.
What’s on your design radar? It changes all the time. I have a massive love for wood joinery at the moment.
How do you stay up to speed with the latest in design trends? I try stay current with designer blogs and articles, and I try make time for exhibitions too. It’s really important for me to constantly share ideas with people – be it online, at work or amongst friends. Always to keep on sharing ideas.
Ideal future work project/s would be…Intelligent food packaging design. On a trip in Sweden I was in awe of how much attention they pay to packaging design. supermarkets are basically filled with clever, strong, beautiful design which made me spend hours in there inspecting everything.
Working at Elle Decoration has given you what insight or thoughts on the magazine industry… That it is very much team work, in Afrikaans you would say, “Een vir almal en almal vir een”; Staying very much up to date with your audience and giving them what they want, without sacrificing your integrity. And seeing the interesting transformation from print to digital and how important social media can be.
Describe yourself in three words Diplomatic, Creative, Tardy
What 5 items won’t you leave home without? I usually forget everything and need to turn around and retrieve my steps to remember what I actually forgot, (this also happens more than once). BUT on a good day: my wallet, a pen, a hat/spf 50 (Mom taught me never to get my face in the sun), an extra pair of comfy (but stylish!) shoes (13 hours in heels can make a girl moody and you never know if you need to switch from a walk to a sprint), and my phone.
Your ideal weekend away place and plan Packing in my Chow puppy and significant other for a trip up the West Coast, or Garden Route to Wilderness. All 3 of us really like sleeping late, eating and outdoor activities, so the weekend will be filled with that, pretty much!
Sundays are for…Sundays are my absolute favourite day. I actually avoid doing anything on a Saturday just so I’m fully rested for my Sunday. Definitely a day for family and who ever is brave enough to join the crazy bunch. Outings. Morning mimosas. Braais. A Eat-whatever-you-want day.
Before you found your way to Design, what field did you envision you’d work in? I wanted to be a culinary chef. This is might be my Afrikaans genes kicking in, but I love hosting – entertaining and fattening up my guests and ensuring they never leave hungry. Sometimes when I’m cooking at home I like to pretend that I’m on a cooking show and everything will be judged and needs to look and taste absolutely perfect. This is where my eye for design also comes in – the presentation of food.
