CAPE TOWN

Top of the weekend’s Mother City agenda is the Bo-Kaap Cultural Market – we’ll be in Rose Street to fill up on traditional cakes, rotis, curries and samoosas, as well as stock up on fresh flowers, spices and jars of tangy home-made pickles. Last Saturday of each month, 10am-4pm, 67 Rose Street, Bo-Kaap

The City Bowl Market on Hope is a foodie’s dream. Go there for everything from Drizzle It’s fresh Italian pastas and sauces, to products by Sea Logix, who use South African seaweed in their spices and chutneys. And it doesn’t stop: with Belgian waffles and handmade chocolates to die for, it’s hard to accept that there’s so much food, yet so little time…. Every Saturday from 9am-2pm, 14 Hope Street, Gardens

The market that started it all, The Neighbourgoods Market, is a steady favourite for fresh organic produce and gourmet products displayed alongside the work of local designers. Go early to avoid the rush. Every Saturday, 9am-2pm, The Old Biscuit Mill, 373-375 Albert Road, Woodstock

The Bay Food and Wine Market in Hout Bay is a gem, from the Urban Nosh champers and oysters, to Simply Pink’s fresh salmon or prawns cooked by Cay Mare (La Cuccina’s head chef). Don’t forget the home-made Italian liqueurs, which Massimo’s serves in edible chocolate cups – limoncello on a Saturday morning, anyone? First Friday of the month, 5pm-9pm, and every Saturday, 9.30am-2.30pm, Victoria Mall (Under La Cuccina), Hout Bay

DURBAN

The Stables Lifestyle Market retains the look and feel of the old stables, making it a great spot to while away a morning browsing through the books, toys, home decor and antiques. There are also plenty of food choices, and the music and entertainment make this a lovely family-friendly destination. Wednesdays and Fridays from 6pm-10pm and Sundays from 10am-5pm, Jacko Jackson Drive (near Rugby Stadium), Durban

Hillcrest Heritage Market has it all, from gumboots for rainy days (not a bad idea at this time of year), to restored furniture, paintings and plenty of farm-fresh fruit and vegetables, preserves, cured meats and cheeses. Have an early lunch or stock up on goodies for an afternoon picnic. Last Sunday of each month, 9am-1pm, 9 Old Main Road, Hillcrest, Natal Midlands
