On 18 July, DECO will be hosting our special reader decorating workshop at Pretoria’s Brooklyn Mall. We caught up with guest speaker, Home Fabrics’ Marc Shotland, for a preview of what guests can expect with all the tips and exciting new fabric trends.
So Marc, what can readers expect from you and Home Fabrics at the decorating workshop?
The presentation I will be giving will be on Home Fabrics and most importantly, a preview of our very latest collections, colour trends and how to use these textiles and wallpapers in a room.
What are the winter trends in fabrics & furnishings that DECO readers should explore?
Bold use of colour portrayed in vibrant jewel like tones in various textures, prints and embroideries. I’m thrilled to also see the timeless leopard print is back in full force represented on plush velvets and embellished wallcoverings. For me, winter trends are not about what’s in and what’s out but more about what makes you feel warm, snuggly and comfy in your personal space.
Are there any key colour palettes or combinations for winter you particularly like?
Each editor really plays with colour and trends in their own signature style but personally I like the mix of teal and purple, black and navy and of course warm earthy neutral tones. At my presentation I will be showcasing some of these qualities as well as also advising how one can change their summer space into a more cosy winter snug – all without breaking the bank.
What’s new at Home Fabrics? We’ve had a little look around your Kramerville showroom…
We are so excited about our new flagship showroom in Kramerville. The space is 950m2 of sheer inspiration. Due to the vast open spaces holding our local and international collections, we have managed to clearly define brands allowing clients to easily identify fabrics and wallpapers with a simple perusal of the showroom.
The displays are reminiscent of Haute Couture as we have pushed the boundaries of colour combinations, pattern on pattern and texture upon texture. Home Fabrics is also opening up a new showroom on Durban’s cosmopolitan Florida Road as well as a branch in George which we are extremely excited about.
Can you share with us your top 3 fabric swatches and where you’d put them in your home?
For me, when it comes to fabric, I must admit I am instantaneously drawn. I don’t dilly daddle on if’s, but or maybe’s. For upholstery, I am crazy about Primair from our new Linen Roots collection. It has that gorgeous floppy handle which makes you just want to sink right into your sofa and stay there. Christian Lacroix’s latest collection Nouveaux Mondes is a kaleidoscope of colour, texture and digital prints. One of the fabrics in the collection is titled Soft Manaos Onyx. It is a gorgeous digital print cotton velvet in a bold colour combination. This applied to a retro occasional chair will most definitely be the wow factor in an interior. Lastly, I must include Clarke & Clarke’s wide width quality Amore colour Ash from the Traviata collection. The hand dip-dyed technique is so cool and with its simple play of colour and technique that, through its simplicity, has so much depth and appeal.
How would you encourage DECO readers to embrace bold colour choices in their home?
Select a palette you find easy to live with and that will also give a solid foundation to your interior. From there I would suggest selecting two accent colours and combining these with expressive patterns and prints. Don’t be afraid to mix print on print. It creates a bold statement and depth in an interior.
If we make one change in our home décor this winter, what should it be?
Replace your summery, fresh scatter covers with warmer more textured qualities and prints. This will give your interior a whole new look and one that is easily changeable.
How do you ‘hibernate in style’ during the winter season?
I’m mad about Designers Guild’s throws. They come in a variety of yarns but I am most looking forward to snuggling in with the chunky linen throws in gorgeous ombre shades.
