The interior decorations of Dokter and Misses are synonymous with Johannesburg and characterised by daring, geometric patterns. Their collector’s pieces have captured the hearts of creatives around the globe, from New York to Dubai. We had a chat with the wedded couple behind the brand, featured in our #WinterIssue last year.

Industrial designer Adriaan Hugo and graphic designer Katy Taplin run their multi-disciplinary product design company, Dokter and Misses, from their Braamfontein workshop and showroom.

Crediting music and sketch books as their studio must-haves, Katy and Adriaan see their space as very utilitarian. “It’s all about production so we don’t have art in the space. We’re surrounded by prototypes and working models. Our favourite thing is that it’s right below our showroom so we feel connected to the city. But we are running out of space…”

Having designed and developed award-winning products, furniture, lighting and interiors for everyone from Wits University to MTV, Dokter and Misses are perfectly placed to advise DECO on how to make an artful home. “Create areas to effortlessly display and hang art and artefacts. For example, invest in a shelf or server or get one of Joe Paine’s picture rails.”
