Katy Taplin and Adriaan Hugo of Dokter and Misses have been particularly busy of late, having recently collaborated with both Gone Rural to create a Woven Screen and with Ronel Jordaan to design the Veld Couch and Pebble Stool.
The screens are made of a slender steel frame with inserts woven from a combination of sustainably harvested sisal and indigenous Lutindzi grass, which grows wild on rocky outcrops in the Swazi mountains. The inserts, handwoven by the Gone Rural women in Swaziland, introduce this age-old production method to the office environment. Source.
“The new Veld couch and Pebble stool bring together the hand-felted stone shapes that Jordaan is known for and Dokter and Misses’ geometric metalwork. The combination of soft, organic forms plus graphic patterned latticework is testimony that the best of both can result in something completely original. The recently launched furniture is specially treated for both indoor and outdoor use, and can be customised for a wealth of colour and graphic variations.” Source
Intended for the Wyatt Hairdressers & Barbering, the couch’s design is based on the idea of putting rocks in a cage – like a gabion. The framework took inspiration from the super-ornate burglar bars on the buildings in Maputo. Working with Ronel, the creative trio collaborated to make the couch comfortable and outdoor-friendly.
