Hello and welcome to our 100th issue!

This birthday issue has serendipitously become both The Trends Issue and my final issue as editor of ELLE Decoration South Africa.

Over the past five years, I have watched trends come and go, reinvent themselves, recede and reemerge. Big names, bold ideas and beautiful homes from all over the world – we’ve seen and shared it all. But, most excitingly, I have watched how African design and craft have been catapulted onto the world’s stage. Africa’s star is rising and I am proud to have been part of the process.

Every year Pantone announces the colour of the year a week before we put the Trends Issue to print. At this late point we usually make a few quick changes to incorporate this new colour onto our pages. I’m happy to say that before the colour was revealed, we had already worked Marsala – an earthy wine-red – into our Trend Forecast… and, bizarrely enough, the shirt that I had dyed from pale pink to burgundy (now Marsala), arrived back on the exact day of the announcement, ready to wear in my final editor’s pic. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

In this issue we look back in order to move forward.

We present the best of the last 100 issues and end with ‘The Home of the Future’ (page 124) where we show
how technology can buy back time and make your life
a lot simpler.

It feels right to call it a day at 100, and to hand over this seasoned gal into exciting new hands.
