Ever wanted to climb inside the world of a renowned and often controversial artist? Outsider, a documentary film screening at the Encounters South Africa International Documentary Festival from 5-15 June, does just that, by telling the story of Beezy Bailey. Never one to play it safe, painter, sculptor and performance artist Beezy invites us into his Kalk Bay studio, giving a rare glimpse into his creative process. The film also includes commentary by his mother, brother, critics and collectors.
Encounters will also be screening the Oscar-nominated Cutie and The Boxer, about the life of artist Ushio ‘Guy-chan’ Shinohara and his artist wife, Noriko, who created the alter ego of Cutie to explore and makes sense of her life as Mrs Shinohara, living in the shadow of her husband. In the award-winning Finding Vivian Maier, a cache of 100 000 forgotten photos shed light on the life of an unassuming nanny – the eponymous Vivian – and her extraordinary talents as one of the world’s first street-style photographers. And in Behind the Lens, director Liz Fish focuses on how eight South African photographers, including Benny Gool and Peter Magubana, used their cameras as weapons in the fight against apartheid.
