In this shifting design and media landscape…
Every year, ELLE DECORATION sets out on a pilgrimage to the Milan Furniture Fair to meet with the editors of all our sister publications and to hand over the coveted EDIDA awards to the world’s best designers. This year’s trip was particularly fascinating as we continue to brace ourselves and adapt in the face of a rapidly shifting design and media landscape.
Our ways of thinking, of relating, consuming, making, being and communicating in this age of connectivity continue to change, and so too, our homes, furniture and workspaces. Just consider the following revolutions: the rise of 3D printing, of sustainable thinking, democratisation of design, re-editions, consumer participation, big data, ‘hacking’ and epidemic online communication and publishing, to name just a few, and how they have impacted the design landscape. The design world is highly reactive to economic and social changes, and at the moment, is responding with a kind of passionate prudence, with an anti-star mentality. Instead, multidisciplinary and pioneering collaborations are the new heroes of design. With this in mind, we looked at the ongoing relationship between design and fashion, and how the boundaries between them continue to be broken down.
Design, like fashion, is for everyone and continues to be democratised. The future is now, and we are excited to be a part of it.
