The relationship between fine art and design furniture is an important and exciting field to explore and appreciate. In our latest issue, DECO called in the experts, asking Cube Gallery to give us a little history on culturally significant dining chair and table designs, as well as their masterful designers.
Designer: Alvar Aalto (1898-1976)
Born: Kuortane, Finland
Architect and designer
In the early 1930s, Alvar Aalto invented a process of bending thick layers of birch into graceful and strong frames. This L-leg solved the problem of attaching the legs to chairs and tables, which could now be fastened with screws directly to the chair and tabletops. Table91 is based on this technique, yet remains timeless. From: R21 204
Designer: Harri Koskinen
Born: Finland (1970)
Harri Koskinen’s design style is characterised by practicality and innovative solutions that meet the needs of the consumer and manufacturer. His Lento project (‘lento’ is the Finnish word for ‘flight’) aimed to create weightless and affordable furniture, and the slender, structured HK001 Chair is at the core of the collection.
