The Guild Group is all set to launch GUILD in June 2017. The 450-square-metre flagship design destination will be located at the V&A Waterfront Silo District in Cape Town and will be a multifaceted venue that includes a a concept store, an in-house studio range of furniture, and the Southern Guild Gallery, showcasing collectible, limited-edition design and art.

‘GUILD will be a portal to the most inspirational and adventurous world of design, art and lifestyle in Africa,’ says The Guild Group CEO Trevyn McGowan, elaborating that it will offer a concept-driven experience, selling bespoke items alongside contemporary and limited-edition furniture. ‘In the same spirit with which we hosted GUILD International Design Fair, this permanent space will allow us to hold exhibitions with international galleries, show ground-breaking locally produced pieces before they’re taken to other parts of the world, and offer a more rigorous exhibition programme that will not only premiere the continent’s top design, but also introduce a new stable of artists to the growing followers of this investment category.’

The Guild Group is collaborating with a hand-picked group of top creatives for GUILD CONCEPT to present a fresh and intriguing collection of must-have items. The Guild Group’s Creative Director, Tammy Tinker, will guide the development of seasonal ranges with leading Cape Town manufacturers, utilising commissioned designs from selected visionary voices – from fine art to fashion and furniture design – to create limited-edition product ranges.

For the launch collab-collection, distinctive artwork from Andile Buka, Andile Dyalvane, Atang Tshikare, Buki Akib, Conrad Botes, Dokter and Misses, Justine Mahoney, Laduma Ngxokolo, Lukhanyo Mdingi and Porky Hefer will transform into exclusive accessories, fashion and homeware and their own disruptive take on the ‘I Love Cape Town’ T-shirt.

‘We’ve identified brands that have beautiful design as their ethos, and have worked together to develop collaborative items unique to GUILD.’

Alongside GUILD CONCEPT will stand GUILD STUDIO selling production furniture by South African designers, leading with an in-house range designed by The Guild Group CCO Julian McGowan. GUILD STUDIO will offer ranges by some of the most important names in local, contemporary design, including Gregor Jenkin, Meyer von Wielligh and Dokter and Misses. ‘We are inviting the customer to select pieces that have narrative and longevity, allowing them to curate their homes with personality and a viewpoint’, says Julian.

Southern Guild gallery will move from its current Woodstock location into GUILD at the Silo, offering highly curated exhibitions and solo presentations that will continue to redefine perceptions of design and art from the continent. Southern Guild’s inaugural show will celebrate the work of the gallery’s design heroes – stalwarts who have made their mark on the African design landscape over the past nine years since Southern Guild was established. These globally acclaimed designers and artists include Adam Birch, Andile Dyalvane, Atang Tshikare, Charles Haupt, Cheick Diallo, Conrad Hicks, David Krynauw, Dokter and Misses, Gregor Jenkin, Hamed Ouattara, John Vogel, Justine Mahoney, Laurie Wiid van Heerden, Meyer von Wielligh, Otto du Plessis, Paco Pakdoust, Porky Hefer and Xandre Kriel.
