The much anticipated SINNERLIG collection by one of Britain’s biggest design talents, Ilse Crawford, comes to IKEA this month. Good news for South African fans of the IKEA brand: NEVADA Furniture will be bringing the SINNERLIG range to SA.
Ilse Crawford is a designer, academic and creative director with a simple mission to put human needs and desires at the centre of all that she does. The SINNERLIG collection is her first collaboration with IKEA, with a range of 30 sustainably-sourced products; from larger furniture pieces such as cork-covered tables and a daybed to small decorative accessories like hand-blown glass bottles.
Her mission statement of sorts is:
‘Creating environments where humans feel comfortable; public spaces that make people feel at home and homes that are habitable and make sense for the people who live in them. It means designing furniture and products that support and enhance human behaviour and actions in everyday life. It means restoring the human balance in brands and businesses that have lost their way.’
With the rapid growth in the overload of digital media we are fed on a daily basis. The consumer driven market has started seeking out natural, artisanal and sustainable ways to get us back in touch with our roots.
Our fast-paced online connections of the digital age has left us craving real human connections and moments. The Ilse Crawford SINNERLIG range has done a sterling job of getting us back in touch with reality and will certainly entice our senses with its elements of cork, wood and glass.
Cork is the predominant material in the collection, used in thin layers to cover table tops and seats as well as thicker sections to form tops for jars and bases for lamps. – Dezeen
It’s so important to get human qualities like warmth, well-being, and care into the end product. – Ilse Crawford
We see lighting as background; it’s not trying to compete with these fantastic icons of design – it’s a different thing. But we all need a number of lights that aren’t supposed to be waving at you.
The natural colour palette of the SINNERLIG collection, with its simple lines and organic shapes is truly a feast for the eyes. Not to mention, it’s also somewhat of a cork lover’s heaven; with cork being naturally soft and a dirt-repellent material it is also water resistant, which makes it very sustainable, economical and adaptable for use inside or outside your home.
