This year’s JHP Gourmet Guide is here, featuring South Africa’s 25 plated and 50 rated chefs, restaurants and recipes to help you plan your culinary journey for 2019.
Since its inception in 2016, the JHP Gourmet Guide by respected global restaurant reviewer and writer Jenny Handley has been presenting South Africans with a curated compendium of top-rated and plated local chefs, restaurants and dishes.
Following the South African restaurant plate rating system – which is the equivalent of Michelin stars in the UK, US, Asia and South America, and hats in Australia – the JHP Gourmet Guide evaluates and rewards local fine-dining restaurants in an impartial and fair way.
The restaurants and chefs aren’t compared to one another, but are instead measured up against global benchmarks, establishments and professionals, resulting in a top-class evaluation that can be recognised worldwide.
One plate is awarded to restaurants serving exceptional cuisine, two plates are awarded for restaurants offering impeccable dining, and three plates are awarded
for restaurants that provide an overall world-class experience.
Then there are the Haute Performance Awards, which are given to those leaving their mark in the industry. The awards are broken down into five categories, namely Haute Property, Haute Passion, Haute Pride, Haute Provenance and Haute People.
The pièce de résistance is the SWISS Culinary Innovation Award, presented by SWISS and the JHP Gourmet Guide, which recognises fine dining that elevates the customer experience through creativity, effort, efficiency, passion, accuracy, precision and sustainability. It was awarded to Chef Luke Dale Roberts of The Test Kitchen fame, with one of his remarkable dishes gracing the cover of the JHP Gourmet Guide 2019.
All of this culminates in one beautifully presented book, complete with information about the restaurants, insights and recipes from the chefs and magnificent food photography that will delight any foodie (both local and international).
