For our latest Summer Issue we traveled to the little fishing town of Arniston to photograph a beautiful fishermen’s cottage. We knew of course a visit to this town wouldn’t be complete without a scroll through the laid-back fishing village with its iconic white and blue facades and thatched roofs. Our scrolls always seemed to lead us to Willeen’s Arts & Crafts – a much-loved Arniston establishment and seaside cafe, ‘and the cottage with the best view in town‘, says Willeen herself. Here’s what Willeen prepared for us on our last day of shooting…

Pickled fish – A traditional Cape dish (Known in Afrikaans as Kerrievis)

Ingredients 2 kg white fish fillets, seasoned with salt and pepper | 4 large onions, sliced | 2 tablespoons turmeric | 2 tablespoons curry powder* | 750 ml vinegar | 125ml sugar* | 5 bay leaves | 2 tablespoons peppercorns   * You can add more curry powder or sugar to taste.

Instructions 1. Toss the fish in a little flour. 2. Heat the oil and lightly brown the fish. 3. Drain on a paper towel and set aside while you make the sauce. 4. Lightly fry the onion rings in oil until they’re soft and translucent. 5. Add the turmeric and curry powder and cook over high heat for one minute. 6. Add the rest of the ingredients and simmer together for about 7 minutes. 7. Allow to cool. 8. Place layers of fish in a bowl and pour sauce over each layer. 9. Refrigerate overnight. Keeps in the fridge for up to one month.
