After suffering considerable damage in a fire last year, Lanzerac Hotel & Spa in Stellenbosch boasts a brand-new look, which sees elements of the past combined with present-day touches.
With its rich Cape heritage, award-winning wines, top-quality facilities and picturesque white façades offset by scenic mountain ranges, Lanzerac Hotel & Spa in Jonkershoek Valley is an idyllic five-star retreat steeped in history.
The 326-year-old estate, which has recently undergone extensive renovations after suffering considerable damage in a fire last year, has been restored to its former glory by Project Co-ordinator Con van der Colff.
‘After the fire, we as a team became much more heritage-conscious in our approach,’ says the designer, who combined an array of restored vintage furniture and ornate collectables with original features such as sandstone-clad fireplaces and weathered slate floors as well as a selection of pieces salvaged from the blaze.
The grand public spaces – which include the moody Craven Lounge cigar bar, the elegant Manor Kitchen restaurant, the relaxed Taphuis eatery and the refined Governor’s Hall lobby – are magnificent to behold, but it’s the 53 suites and their expansive bathrooms that truly take your breath away.
‘No two rooms are alike – they are all unique,’ says Van der Colff, adding that he began the decoration process in each by selecting a main piece and allowing the design to grow organically around that central point.
Large upholstered headboards contrast with exposed brick walls, sumptuous Persian carpets with smooth marble surfaces and dark mahogany furniture with soft neutral palettes in an arresting aesthetic that’s as creative as it is considered.
Add in the fact that the estate also boasts a world-class day spa and health centre, premium wine tasting room and artisanal delicatessen, and Lanzerac Hotel & Spa has everything you need to experience the winelands in complete luxury.
