The recently revamped Long Café at the Vineyard Hotel is an ideal spot for a light lunch or coffee date. The DECO team was looking for both, making it the obvious choice for an afternoon of brainstorming for our annual and upcoming Style Directory.
Situated in the leafy suburb of Newlands, the historic Vineyard Hotel underwent some extensive upgrades last year which included the creation of a cosy coffee corner. Aptly named after the gorgeous handprint artwork by Richard Long that it looks onto, Long Café seamlessly combines the old with the new, paying homage to the hotel’s rich history.
Janet Petousis of the Arts and Decor team wanted the café to have an authentic and raw feel about it. This was achieved by including an exposed wall and archway, revealing the original brickwork, and by using earthy tones throughout.
A beautiful hand blown glass light fitting that looks like water droplets when the sunlight shines on it, is a standout feature in the café. Plush cream and black upholstry, a long centre table by Pierre Cronje, and wall prints by famous South African artist, JH Pierneef, complete the look.
Coffee enthusiasts are especially in for a treat. The cafe boasts a large Diedrich coffee roaster which is manned by Cape Town based roaster Quaffee, so customers can order their daily dose of caffeine freshly roasted and blended on site. The café serves light meals and has a generous selection of cakes, patisserie and sandwiches.
We ordered a variety of sandwiches which were filled with the likes of pastrami, salami and good ol’ fashion chicken mayo with a twist. After sipping on our cappuccinos (which is served with a delectable biscotti) we ended our visit with a guided stroll through the beautifully landscaped 7-acre riverside gardens surrounding the hotel. The perfect afternoon.
