What does Hemma specialise in?
We specialise in the design of contemporary furniture pieces with a focus on the use of sustainable material and efficient manufacturing utilising modern technology. By sustainable material, we mean FSC certified timber from recognised and sustainable forests. For this reason we have chosen birch as our favoured medium. It is widely acknowledged that birch is one of the best-managed forestry resources in the world. This is in line with our green ethos.
What are you currently working on?
We are currently working on the Sanlam Handmade Contemporary FoodWineDesign Fair, which is on at Hyde Park Corner Shopping Centre in Joburg from 7-9 November. We will be bringing our ‘Riempie’ Tilberg chairs that accompany an adjustable trestle table, as well as wall unit display boxes. We are very excited as this will be our first visit to the Gauteng market.
Where does your inspiration come from?
Our inspiration comes from the sleek and minimalist design evident in Scandinavian type furniture pieces. We are striving for a modern contemporary look that combines simplicity with elegance and aesthetics.
What excites you about design?
For us having design freedom means we can collaborate with customers and, where possible, integrate their requirements into an existing or new piece. Often the best ideas come from someone’s unfettered vision. Good design gives pleasure and improves the quality of our lives through furniture pieces that work well, are affordable and look beautiful.
What’s your favourite space in your home?
I love our combined kitchen and living area. Families traditionally come together in the kitchen but inevitably someone is left alone to do the cooking or washing up. In our home nearly everything, from doing homework and dining to playing cards and preparing food happens in this combined area.
