Lauren Wilson ELLE Decoration intern header
Lauren reveals the inside scoop on what it's like to be a DECO intern - would YOU have what it takes?

Internships can be a tricky business. Finding an opportunity you love with a company willing to take you on involves a creative application and balancing hard work with a busy college schedule. We grilled DECO intern, Lauren Wilson, with 20 questions to find out more.

Lauren Wilson joined the DECO team this month to support our digital publishing. Fitting in hours at DECO HQ alongside a Graphic Design course at Friends of Design is no mean feat, especially travelling to and from Noordhoek every day. Dedicated to keeping our social media channels buzzing with enticing content, prepping for shoots and even writing for us, Lauren hasn’t stopped since she started – somehow, we squeezed in the time to grill her with 20 questions…

1) What projects are you working on at DECO at the moment?
My main task is to ensure that all the social media platforms for ELLE Deco are kept updated with the interesting information and décor trends from our website.

2) How do you spend your time when you’re not running around for the DECO team?
Apart from being at college and doing my projects, I really love spending time with friends. Even if it’s just a quick catch up over coffee, anytime with friends is better than none. However; I have to say that I’m also a fan of just relaxing in the garden capturing images of nature.

3) Why did you want to join the DECO team madness?
I went into studying Graphic Design with the idea of getting into magazine layouts and just being in the magazine industry in general. I find it really interesting to be behind the scenes and to see how such a great magazine is put together for every issue. To get this kind of exposure to the industry so early into my career was an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up.

4) What are you most looking forward to about the experience?
To be able to work alongside the professionals and to see what it takes to create such an extraordinary international magazine and the opportunity to learn everything there is to know from the best in the industry.

5) Where is home for you and what conjurs up the feeling of home?
Growing up, I moved around a lot, which was great as it enabled me to experience many different places. I would have to say that the small village in the Overberg, Greyton, will always be home for me and I will always have my own little piece of Greyton, as that is where my family farm is.

6) Tell us your favourite things about winter?
Scarves. For me, they are the ultimate accessory, I just love them.

7) What would your ideal weekend entail?
When I’m in Cape Town, I love going to the Old Biscuit Mill. But if I’m away, my ideal weekend is definitely to be in Greyton, taking adventures up to the gorge, having the village favourite lemon curd pancakes from the morning market and being around the cosy campfire at night surrounded by friends and family.

8) What would you eat for your last supper?
All-you-can-eat sushi. No doubt about it.

9) Favourite room in the house and why?
The lounge, who needs more than Wi-Fi and to be close to the kitchen?

10) Best shop for décor, locally and abroad?
Best local décor shop is Weylandts and international (online) décor store is Kathy Kuo Home. The styles and individual items that they offer in their stores, although very different, are exactly the style items I hope to have in my home one day.

11) What are you reading right now?
I enjoy reading, but to be honest, I don’t really get around to it too often. The last book that I read was Jodi Picoult’s House Rules.

12) …and listening to?
Bastille. I can’t enough of that British band as well as our local talent such as Jeremy Loops and Shortstraw.

13) …and downloading?
Friends. Watching one or two episodes at a time on DStv just isn’t enough. It’s another one of those shows that I can watch a countless number of times.

14) Where do you browse online for inspiration? | Her unbelievably tiny Postcards for Ants make me wish I could paint like that. | Inspiration for anything from mouth-watering meals to fabulous fashion items. | You almost get to travel the world through the photographs on this site. | I couldn’t help but to be inspired by a graphic designer with mutual initials!

15) What app could you not live without?
Whatsapp, because SMS-ing doesn’t run on Wifi, and also Uber, the app that gives you a private driver, wherever and whenever you need it.

16) Your top 5 people to follow on Instagram?
@insta.lens | A South African invention that has made it internationally, creating incredible images.
@lorraineloots | The artist behind the superb Postcards for Ants.
@unrth@ourplanetdaily | Photographs of this planet like you have never seen before.
@laurajenkinson | She takes make-up artistry to a complete new level.

17) Favourite quote?

“I went into the woods because I wanted to live deliberately. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life! To put to rout all that was not life. And not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”

Dead Poets Society

18) Best advice you’ve ever been given?
‘If you never try, you’ll never know.’

19) What advice would you give to others looking to intern at DECO?
Be enthusiastic and have a keen willingness to learn every aspect of how it’s done behind the scenes.

20) What do you think you’ll be doing 5 years from now?
My intention is to stay and grow in the magazine industry and hopefully get to work aboard.
