Meet the 2011 finalists of our SOLVE New Talent Search Competition (above, from left to right): Timbr by Roland Richartz from Johannesburg, City Scape Stool by Marc Guy Baker from Cape Town, Protea Stool by Ruben Rossouw from Cape Town, and the Thando beaded stool by Leanne Bates from Durban.

This year’s brief asked for young designers to come up with an original and marketable stool for South Africa’s leading home living retail store Boardmans. Judges Trevyn McGowan, Haldane Martin, DECO Editor Laureen Rossouw, Porky Hefer, and Scott Murray selected the four finalists from over a 100 entries, impressed by the high level of detail and craftsmanship of all entrants. ‘We’re looking for commercial appeal from the designers. The designs need to reflect the Boardmans ethos, and I think this competition is a great way of showcasing young local talent and design to our consumer’, says Scott Murray from Boardmans.

We will be announcing the winner tonight at a special SOLVE event at &Union in Bree Street, Cape Town. Buy the latest Summer Issue of ELLE Decoration to see what caught the judges’ eye, and watch this space tomorrow to see who took the top spot.
