In our latest #SummerIssue we asked South Africa’s most adventurous celebs where to go to make the most of your summer break. It was on the sunny shores of Jamaica where we got to know photographer Rikki Hibbert…
What took you to Jamaica and what will Jamaic’ us crazy when we get there?
I was shooting the stills for a South African reality TV show – it really is a Caribbean paradise with aquamarine water and silver sands. The highlight was visiting Nine Mile, a tiny village in the beautiful mountains of St Ann, and the birth and resting place of Bob Marley. Try and visit the Dunns River Falls in Ocho Rios too, it is majestic!
There is something perfect about a career that sends you all around the world!
As the summer holidays approach, where is your all time favourite destination?
Traveling through Spain! Madrid, Barcelona, Toledo, Granada and Seville – try get everywhere! Try all the Tapas as they change from region to region, and you will obviously discover the best Paella. Visit the Alhambra in Granada – one of the new Seven Wonders of the World – but book your tickets in advance! Also, Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia is the most spectacular Church I have ever seen. Make sure to visit the El Rastro, Madrid’s oldest and most iconic street market every Sunday.
If your decor dream came true, what would your home consist of?
The first thing I would do is put in wooden floors, and then I’d furnish the rest of my home with furniture and pieces from Weylands and Amathuli. I also love upcycled pieces and furnishings with raw, organic textures.
For aspiring photographers, what advice do you have? How you did you break the market?
In one word: persistence. Rather than catching a ‘break’, I went on a long and deliberate journey; starting with a four-year degree, and then rolling out with a marketing strategy to get my work known by the people I wanted to work for.
If you could only take two lenses with you…
I’d recommend the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 and the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8.
How has the ubiquity of camera phones and photo apps affected photographers like yourself?
Well, clients that commission a photo shoot still want the best possible quality and one can’t produce that with a camera phone. However, even I need a break from my camera – it weighs as much as a baby, and my camera backpack when fully loaded is over 30kg, so I often welcome the idea of opting for my iPhone.
