Candice is an avid traveller and owns her own small décor business, Modern Gesture

Taking on an internship at ELLE Decoration is no easy task, busy from sunrise to sunset sourcing samples, writing, researching and assisting on shoots. We sat down with current DECO intern Candice Lawrence to find out more.

Candice Lawrence is one of DECO’s superstar interns, working across the team on everything from sourcing for shoots to researching inspirational style features for elledecoration.co.za and even finds the time to run her own product design business on the side. Read Candice’s candid 20 questions to get to know what it takes to make a real success of a DECO internship…

What projects are you working on at DECO at the moment?

I’ve recently finished up working on Wellness, DECO Lab and Inspiration features but I know there is plenty more to come!

How do you spend your time when you’re not running around for the DECO team?

Relaxing in front of a fire, reading, watching Crime Investigation or working on my own small business Modern Gesture.

Why did you want to join the DECO team?

For the madness! I wanted to learn more about decoration as this goes hand-in-hand with my small side-line business Modern Gesture, which is inspired by cutting-edge lifestyle and homeware pieces. I enjoy working in teams as there is always something new one can learn. Working with the DECO team will also give me the opportunity to expand my knowledge on design, layout and editorial work.

What are you most looking forward to about the experience?

Working in a team again, learning from others, engaging with readers and seeing first what the buzz is on the streets, being ahead of the trend and learning how to spot future and developing trends – not just in the decor field but also digitally.

Where is home for you and what conjures up the feeling of home?

The sea! The sound of the waves, the feeling of the water and sand in between my toes, the smell of the salty air and how it feels upon my face; it just draws me in all the time and then I’m relaxed.

Tell us your favourite things about winter?

I love dressing up warm and then standing in the cold; I am odd like that! Something about being cover in layers of warm clothes makes me want to venture into cold weather.

What would your ideal weekend entail?

Being able to jet set to an island and enjoying its warm waters and partying until the next morning.

What would you eat for your last supper?

All things sweet and chocolaty.

Favourite room in the house and why?

It’s not exactly in my house, but it’s my workshop. Being able to experiment and play around with different woods on the lathe is cool.
