The Fringe Arts is a design and art collective put together by Chantal Louw and Thessa Bos, focussing on art and design made entirely in South Africa. Over the last year or so, Louw and Bos have put together a number of Fringe Arts pop-up shops, popping at the Spier Contemporary in April, along the Fanwalk during the World Cup, and now, there’s a brand new Fringe Arts Pop Up Shop overlooking the yacht basin in the Alfred Mall at the V&A Waterfront.
The pop up shop retail model is a popular one in Europe and the US, but is fairly new here in South Africa. The idea is that an unoccupied space is suddenly filled by a temporary tenant who makes a big impact, but doesn’t stay for long, so it’s all about getting the pop! while it’s hot!
The Fringe Arts store features a curated selection of art and design that includes work by ceramicists Tamarillo and Shirley Fintz, jewellery designers Beloved Beadwork and Skermunkil, bags from Give it Bag, and and furniture re-inventions from Recreate. Fine Art available at The Fringe Arts includes work by Dale Yudelman and Frank van Reenen and limited edition prints by Michael Taylor and David Goldblatt.
