Recent World Design Capital visitors and participants were Celia-Hannes – the working duo of Célia Picard and Hannes Schreckensberger. Based in France and Austria, Celia-Hannes stayed in Cape Town for 6 weeks, collaborating with local grass weavers and metal workers and developing a furniture collection – Frugal Collection.
With Celia-Hannes work having been showcased in our magazine previously, the team were excited to see what inspiration Africa would have on their latest collection. Their emezi grass mat wall tiles featured in our December Summer issue African Style Inspiration pages.
Celia-Hannes work in architecture, design and art, and having observed simple techniques and materials used by artisans in South African townships, they wanted to ‘highlight the potential of their contemporary interpretations’. Frugal Collection comprises a metal wire stool with integrated storage space, grass mat wall tiles, a rope and steel hanging system, and grass wall mats that incorporate powder-coated steel hanging elements.
The collection is now on show at GREAT DESIGN gallery in Marais, Paris until end of March 2015.
